Finding shelter

The shelter doesn’t need to be too complicated and fussy. You just need to ensure the element of rain cover, keep warm and safe.

First, you need to find a fallen or lying tree trunk. Create a place to lie by stacking many large tree branches to create a frame. Then cover with forest leaves. If possible, look for caves, but make sure the cave is free of wild animals.

You need shelter from wind, rain or scorching sun. But just building a roof is not enough. At night, the cold ground sucks the heat out of your body. So you also have to create a layer that separates your body from the ground.

Looking for a source of water

Normally our body can endure 3 days without water. But without water, our body will be exhausted. Find springs around there to provide water for the body. 

Water always flows in the direction from above. Therefore, low-lying areas and valleys are a common place for water.

  • Get water from the dew

After a night, dew will appear on the grass and leaves. You can collect a certain amount of water from this mist. Use an absorbent cloth to wrap around the leg. You walk through grasslands or bushes. Dew on the grass and leaves will seep into the cloth.

Stop squeezing the water out of the cloth each time it fills with water. Just like that you will also get a fair amount of water. 

The important point is that the risk of infection in this country is very low. You can also spread a tarp, nylon or large leaves in the night to let the dew settle.

  • Get water from evaporation

If you have a plastic bag, you can get water from the surrounding trees. First, tie the bag to a branch and leave it for about 6 to 7 hours. When the sun shines in, the leaves will drain and fall into the bag.

  • Get water from underground vapor condensate

Choose a humid area that gets the most sunlight during the day. You dig a funnel-shaped hole about a meter in diameter. Place at the bottom of the pit a container for water. Then cover the crater with a clean and transparent nylon sheet.

Ballast soil and rock to seal around the edge. In the middle, you put a rock that causes the nylon sheet to drop right at the mouth of the water container.

The heat of the sun causes the moist soil to evaporate and settle on the underside of the nylon sheet. The water will flow down and drip into the water tank located at the bottom of the hole.

A good pit can give a liter of drinking water per day. You can add wet grass underneath the hole to increase the amount of moisture, as long as the grass is not toxic.

Seeking safe food source

Most healthy adults can survive up to 3 weeks without food in warm weather. You may be hungry, but it is better to be healthy if you are sick. Therefore, you must make sure the food you eat is safe for your health.

Insects and other bugs are an easy source of food. Although you may find it disgusting to eat certain types of locusts, it is still better than dying of hunger. These will provide useful nutrition for our body to survive.

You must cook or bake all insects before eating them. Because these insects can contain parasites. Caterpillars and brightly colored insects are poisonous insects. Avoid eating any insects that might bite or sting you. Before eating, be sure to remove the inedible parts such as legs, head, and way.

If you are looking for a source of water, fish is a good source of food without being disgusting. Mushrooms or berries can be poisonous. So you should not eat even though you are hungry. Many fruits in the forest are poisonous, especially the white ones.

Looking for warm fire

Why is there a need for fire? With fire, you can cook food, boil some water and warm your body. Fire can especially scare away wild animals.

Look for dry plants around there and divide them into 3 piles. Make a fire to help keep the body warm when night falls. It is a mistake to think that fire is not necessary in warm weather. You should burn little by little firewood to save as well as avoid forest fires.

Once you’ve made a fire, you can create smoke by burning fresh twigs. The smoke will draw the attention of those nearby. It is best to bring fire-making tools such as matches, lighters. 

If you don’t have a lighter or a match left, you have to start with the traditional ways of making fire. There are many ways for you to create fire such as from lens, flint and steel, bow drill and hand drill.

Bow drill and hand drill both use friction to create fire. To drill a bow, you use hay, leaves, or bark to create a tinder nest that can ignite easily. There are different techniques you can use to create fire by friction.

The most important is the type of wood that you use for the fire table and the spinneret. A vortex shaft is a piece of wood that you will use to rotate to create friction between it and a piece of wood. 

You must create enough friction between the vortex shaft and the fire table. Then you can generate enough heat to create a fire.

How long for you survive in the wilderness?

Without oxygen, you cannot survive more than 3 minutes. In the harsh environment, you can only survive for 3 hours without shelter. 

If you’re in icy water, you won’t live up to 3 hours. Three days is how long you can survive without water. Without food, you can only survive for 3 weeks.
